The chopper style was born in the late 1960′s and 70′s and has its roots in the bobber style, where fenders were removed or “bobbed” with the intent of making motorcycles lighter and thus faster. Chopper motorcycles were the natural evolution of these very first custom motorcycles: frames were “chopped” and stretched, longer raked front forks were installed together with Ape Hangers, bikes were painted in shiny metallic “metal flake” colors and most metal parts were chromed. Decreased weight, lower seat position and length of front ends improved handling and performance at higher speeds, while chopper motorcycles were pretty hard to handle at slower speeds. Choppers were the motorcycles of the rebels!
