I have a Harley with OMP hand controle and brakes. what brake fluid do you recommend for the system

  4. eurocomponents says:

Thank you for your interest in Eurocomponents’ custom brake calipers.

You need to use DOT 4 brake fluid. In any case do not use silicon based oils (like DOT 5).

Please let us know if we can be of further help.
Thank you and have a good day.

I have a 2004 BMC Big Daddy Chopper that has OMP brakes up front (I thought the caliper said OMI, but I can’t seem to find them online and you say you sourced the BMC, so I assume they are yours). I bought the bike used a few months ago and the brakes were really squishy. I took the bike to a friends house to get some paint work done and he decided to “fix” my brakes and now they’re worse. He drained the fluid and replaced it and bled them. Now the brakes are nearly worse then they were before, I can pump a few times and they’ll work…but that’s not the solution. The brake master cylinder says use DOT5 but he put in DOT4! Reading online I think he screwed me because from what I read the 2 fluids are not compatible. We also cannot get the brakes to function properly, they’re so squishy that they bottom out on the grip and we’ve bled them, so that’s not the problem. Do you think that the fluid needs to be changed back to DOT5? Also, should I flush them and maybe rebuild the master cylinder? If so can you provide the parts? I looked in JP Cycles but i need to know the bore size, which I have NO IDEA what it is or how to find out. I’d like to just purchase the rebuild kit from you if possible. Thank you!

Sorry, but OMP has discontinued the production of all motorcycle parts and the components you need are no longer available.
Unfortunately the seals you need were specifically made for OMP and cannot be sourced anywhere else.

I would try to flush the system and replace the mixed oils with DOT 4 (the seals were supposed to be used only with DOT 4 or non-sylicon based oils).
If that does not help, you would need to replace the parts with new aftermarket components.

Please let us know if we can be of further help.
Thank you and have a good day.

Lorenzo, Thanks for the quick reply. You said DOT4, but the label on the master cylinder says DOT5. Did you mean DOT5 or really intend to say DOT4? Thanks again. Randy

  11. eurocomponents says:

    Randy,

I am not sure whose hand controls you are using, but all OMP hand controls, foot controls and calipers were to be installed with DOT 4 brake fluid or with non-silicon based oils (like DOT 5.1 or 5.2).

Please let us know if we can be of further help.
Thank you and have a good day.

Turned out to be that the builder (BMC) put the wrong size master cylinder on! It wasn’t pushing enough fluid for the 6 piston caliper. I put on an 11/16″ master cylinder and it seems to be a lot better. Thanks for your help and insight! Much appreciated!
